Corfu town was established in the 8th century BC and has retained its current form for the past 9 centuries. It is a very well preserved old city, built between two fortresses, reflecting the history of Europe of over a thousand years. This is actually the main reason why its entire historical centre was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in June 2007.
It is the place that opened its arms wide open to all those ill-treated: Jews from Spain; Orthodox Christians from southern Italy and the Ottoman-occupied Greece; refugees from Cyprus, Crete, Peloponnese, Parga; persecuted Serbs; and economic immigrants from Malta and the Dalmatian coast. Corfu welcomed them and built with them a symbol of the Mediterranean, an impenetrable fortress, a milestone of the West.
